How Age Is Calculated for Defence School Exams

This is the most common source of confusion for parents. Understanding the cutoff date system will save you from expensive mistakes — see our detailed Sainik School admission eligibility guide for more.

Every defence school exam has a fixed cutoff date — a specific date on which your child's age is measured. Your child's age on the day of the exam does not matter. What matters is how old they are on the cutoff date.

What Is a Cutoff Date?

A cutoff date is the reference date used to calculate a student's age for eligibility. For example, if the cutoff date is 31 March 2027 and your child is born on 1 April 2015, they turn 12 on 1 April 2027 — but on 31 March 2027, they are still 11 years and 364 days old. This one-day difference can make them ineligible.

💡 Key Insight: Age is always counted as "completed years" — not upcoming birthdays. A child born on 1 April 2015 turns 12 only on 1 April 2027. On 31 March 2027, they are still 11 years old.

Cutoff Dates by Exam

ExamCutoff DateNotes
AISSEE Class 631 March of admission yearSainik Schools admission year starts April
AISSEE Class 931 March of admission yearSame as Class 6
RMS Class 631 March of admission yearRashtriya Military Schools
RMS Class 931 March of admission yearSame cutoff as Class 6
RIMC1 January of entry termTwo intakes — January & July

Why Parents Often Get This Wrong

  • They calculate age as of today, not as of 31 March
  • They count the birthday month itself as a completed year
  • They use the exam date instead of the cutoff date
  • They forget that age limits are usually both minimum AND maximum

Eligibility Rules for Each Defence School Exam

Detailed rules based on the latest available official admission notifications. Always verify with the official notification before applying. You can also read our complete Sainik School eligibility guide for a deeper breakdown.

AISSEE Class 6 Eligibility (Sainik School)

The All India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination (AISSEE) for Class 6 is the most popular defence school entrance exam in India, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the Sainik School Society.

Age Criteria

  • Minimum Age: 10 years as on 31 March of the admission year
  • Maximum Age: 12 years as on 31 March of the admission year

Educational Qualification

The candidate must have passed or be appearing in Class 5 at the time of examination. Students from CBSE, ICSE, and all State Boards are eligible.

Nationality

Indian nationals only. Children of Indian nationals living abroad (OCI/PIO) should verify eligibility with the concerned Sainik School.

Gender Eligibility

Both male and female students are eligible. Sainik Schools were opened to girls from the 2021-22 academic session. Read more in our dedicated guide on Sainik School admission for girls.

Medical Fitness

Candidates must be medically fit as per the standards laid down by the respective school. Detailed medical standards are prescribed in the official prospectus — see our full breakdown of medical standards for Sainik Schools.

Reservation

  • 25% seats reserved for children of Defence Service Personnel
  • SC/ST reservations as per government norms
  • Each state has a quota based on representation
⚠ Common Mistakes: Many parents apply when their child is currently 10 years old but turns 13 before 31 March — making them over-age. Always calculate age specifically as on 31 March, not today's date. Check our guide on seats and vacancies in Sainik Schools to understand how competitive each intake is.

AISSEE Class 9 Eligibility (Sainik School)

Age Criteria

  • Minimum Age: 13 years as on 31 March of the admission year
  • Maximum Age: 15 years as on 31 March of the admission year

Subjects

The exam covers Mathematics, Intelligence Test, Language (English/Hindi), and General Knowledge / Science. Review the complete Sainik School syllabus for a topic-wise breakdown.

💡 Tip: Class 9 entry is more competitive as fewer seats are available. Many students prepare from Class 6–7 itself to maximise their score.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Use This Calculator

Step 1 — Enter Your Child's Date of Birth

Select the exact date of birth from the date picker. Use the date as mentioned in the school records or birth certificate — not an approximation. Even a one-day difference can affect eligibility.

Step 2 — Select Gender

Select male or female. This determines eligibility for RMS and RIMC (boys-only institutions) and filters results accordingly.

Step 3 — Select Current Class

Choose the class your child is currently studying in. This helps the calculator identify which entry class your child can apply for. If your child is in Class 5, see our dedicated Sainik School preparation guide for Class 5.

Step 4 — Choose Target Exam (Optional)

If you already know which exam you are targeting, select it. If you are unsure, leave it as "All Defence Schools" to see all possibilities.

Step 5 — Click Check Eligibility

The results appear instantly. You will see age on cutoff date, eligible exams, class of entry, and personalised next steps.

What Happens After You Check Eligibility?

If Your Child Is Eligible for AISSEE

Great news. Now it's time to start preparing systematically.

If Your Child Is Eligible for RMS

  • Study the RMS exam pattern — it is different from AISSEE in some papers
  • Focus heavily on English, as RMS places a high emphasis on language proficiency
  • Practise analytical reasoning and mathematical problem solving
  • Prepare for the interview and personality test rounds
  • Build physical fitness from an early stage — schools assess overall development
  • Join our RMS coaching programme for structured, exam-focused preparation

If Your Child Is Eligible for RIMC

RIMC is the most competitive of the three. Start preparation early and be thorough.

  • Score above 50% in Class 7 — this is mandatory
  • Master the complete RIMC syllabus for Maths, English, General Knowledge, and Science
  • Write the state-level preliminary exam conducted by the state government
  • Prepare for the medical examination — vision and physical standards are strict
  • Join a dedicated RIMC coaching programme for best results
  • Understand the full RIMC admission process before you begin preparation

If Your Child Is Not Eligible Right Now

Do not be discouraged. Most children fall outside the window for one specific year. Here is what you can do:

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. From the 2021-22 academic session, Sainik Schools have been opened to girl students. Girls can now appear for AISSEE for both Class 6 and Class 9 entry. However, RMS and RIMC are still open only to boys. Check the official notification for any updates each year.
Yes. Students from CBSE, ICSE, and all recognised State Boards are eligible to appear for AISSEE, provided they meet the age and class requirements. The board of study does not affect eligibility.
Yes. ICSE and all State Board students are fully eligible. The AISSEE exam is designed to be board-neutral. The syllabus is based on fundamental topics common across boards.
Generally, no. Defence school age limits are strict and non-negotiable. Some schools offer limited relaxation for SC/ST categories as per government rules — this is usually 2 years. No relaxation is given based on individual circumstances, medical reasons, or requests.
Unfortunately, even one day over the maximum age makes the candidate ineligible. This is a strict rule. If your child's age on the cutoff date is 12 years and 1 day, they cannot apply for Class 6 entry where the maximum age is 12 years. There is no exception to this rule.
Yes. Twins are treated as separate candidates. Both can apply independently, appear in the exam, and will be considered on individual merit. Being twins gives no combined advantage in the selection process.
For AISSEE, you apply for the exam and then get allotted a school based on merit and preference. For RMS, you apply separately. For RIMC, it is a separate application. So yes — in the same academic year, a student can potentially apply for AISSEE and RMS if they meet the eligibility criteria for both.
You typically need: Birth certificate, Aadhaar card, school bonafide certificate, latest mark sheet, two passport-size photographs, and if applicable — caste certificate, domicile certificate, and service certificate for defence quota. Document requirements may vary slightly between exams.
No. Once the application is submitted, the date of birth cannot be changed. This is why it is critical to enter the exact date from the birth certificate. Errors in DOB can lead to rejection of candidature even after selection.
Yes. AISSEE applications are submitted entirely online through the NTA website. RMS applications are also online. RIMC applications are online through the official RIMC website. Physical application forms are no longer used for most defence school exams.
Yes. Each exam has an application fee, which is typically lower for SC/ST and female candidates. Fees are paid online at the time of application. Refer to the specific exam notification for the exact fee amount. School-level fees vary too — see our detailed fee structure for Sainik Schools for a year-wise breakdown.
No. For AISSEE Class 6 entry, the child must be appearing in or must have passed Class 5. A Class 4 student is not eligible. However, if they meet the age criteria next year (when they are in Class 5), they can apply for the following year's exam.
Sainik Schools are under the Ministry of Defence and are designed to prepare students for NDA/INA/OTA. There are over 30 Sainik Schools across India. Rashtriya Military Schools (RMS) — formerly King George's Schools — are Army-run institutions with a stronger military environment. There are only 5 RMS schools. RMS is generally considered more difficult to get into and more structured militarily than Sainik Schools.
RIMC (Rashtriya Indian Military College), Dehradun, is a unique institution that directly feeds into the National Defence Academy (NDA). Most RIMC students go on to join the Indian Armed Forces as officers. It is far more selective (approximately 25 seats per term), more expensive, and considered more prestigious than Sainik Schools. The academic and physical standards are also significantly higher.
Not mandatory, but highly recommended. While self-study is possible for diligent students, structured coaching helps with time management, exam strategy, and covering the syllabus systematically. Coaching becomes more important for RMS and RIMC due to higher competition. If you are based in Punjab, see our guide to the best Sainik School coaching in Punjab. For a complete overview of the exam itself, visit our AISSEE page.
There are over 33 Government Sainik Schools in India. The government has also approved additional New Model Sainik Schools in partnership with private sector, bringing the total number of Sainik School-affiliated institutions to over 100. All are covered under the AISSEE entrance exam. Parents in Punjab often ask specifically about Sainik School Kapurthala, one of the well-known options in the region.
Yes. Students who qualify but are just below the main merit cutoff may be placed on a waiting list. If selected candidates do not join, waiting list candidates are offered admission. The waiting list is typically valid for the same academic year only.
No. The student must have passed Class 5 or be currently appearing in Class 5. A student who has been detained and is repeating Class 5 can apply only if they meet the age criteria and are currently enrolled in Class 5.
AISSEE Class 6 is a written test covering four sections: Mathematics (50 marks), Language Test/English (25 marks), Intelligence Test (25 marks), and General Knowledge (25 marks). The paper is in OMR format and duration is 2.5 hours. No negative marking in Class 6 paper.
Candidates must be medically fit as per standards prescribed in the admission notification. This includes minimum height and weight, normal vision (or correctable vision within limits), absence of colour blindness, and no major physical disability. Detailed medical norms are published in the prospectus.
This calculator is based on the standard eligibility rules from the latest available official notifications. It is designed for guidance purposes. Since rules can change each year when new notifications are released, we strongly recommend verifying your child's eligibility by reading the official notification PDF before applying. The eligibility logic on this page is reviewed by our lead defence education counsellor, Prashant Singh.
New Model Sainik Schools (approved under the PPP model) also use AISSEE for admissions. If your child is eligible for AISSEE, they are also eligible to apply to New Model Sainik Schools. At the time of application, you can list your school preferences including New Model Sainik Schools.
Indian nationals living abroad may check with the specific Sainik School they are interested in. Generally, the exam must be taken in India. OCI cardholders should also verify eligibility with the school directly, as rules differ from purely Indian nationals.
A student can attempt AISSEE as long as they are within the age limit. So if a student is eligible for Class 6 entry from age 10 to 12, they could potentially attempt the exam up to three times. Once they exceed the age limit, they must apply for Class 9 entry (if still within the age band for that).
English is the primary medium of instruction in all Sainik Schools. This is one key reason why improving English language skills is emphasised in AISSEE preparation. Students are expected to adapt to English-medium teaching from Class 6 onwards.
