The All India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination (AISSEE) is the single national-level entrance test conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the Sainik Schools Society, Ministry of Defence. Every year, lakhs of students from across India appear for this exam to compete for seats in 133 Sainik Schools spread across every state and union territory.
AISSEE is held for admission to Class 6 and Class 9. The exam is an offline, objective MCQ-based test with no negative marking — but the competition is extremely intense. With over 50 students competing for every single seat, only the best-prepared candidates make it through.
Beyond the written test, selected students must also clear a medical examination and an interview round. This is why AISSEE coaching that covers all three stages — written, interview, and medical — makes a decisive difference in first-attempt selection.
Applications for AISSEE 2026 open on the NTA portal (exams.nta.nic.in) typically in October–November each year. Students must be studying in Class V (for Class 6 entry) or Class VIII (for Class 9 entry) at the time of application.

| Subject | Questions | Marks Each | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 50 | 3 | 150 |
| Language (English or Hindi) | 25 | 2 | 50 |
| Intelligence & Reasoning | 25 | 2 | 50 |
| General Knowledge | 25 | 2 | 50 |
| TOTAL | 125 | — | 300 |
Mathematics carries 150 out of 300 marks — exactly 50% of the total score. This means a student's Mathematics performance almost single-handedly decides selection. Students who score 45+ in Maths (out of 50) put themselves in the top percentile. Topics include number systems, fractions, decimals, basic algebra, geometry, and mensuration. The Intelligence section tests series completion, analogy, odd one out, and mirror images — skills that improve dramatically with regular practice. General Knowledge focuses on Indian geography, history, defence awareness, and current affairs up to the exam date. The cutoff for general category students is typically 200–240 out of 300 depending on the state and school preference.
| Subject | Questions | Marks Each | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 50 | 4 | 200 |
| Intelligence & Reasoning | 25 | 2 | 50 |
| English | 25 | 2 | 50 |
| General Science | 25 | 2 | 50 |
| Social Studies | 25 | 2 | 50 |
| TOTAL | 150 | — | 400 |
Class 9 AISSEE is conducted in English medium only — making strong English comprehension non-negotiable. Mathematics carries 200 out of 400 marks (50%), with topics from Class 6–8 CBSE including algebra, polynomials, geometry, data handling, and mensuration. General Science covers Physics, Chemistry, and Biology fundamentals. Social Studies includes History, Geography, and Civics. The cutoff for general category is typically 280–330 out of 400. Since there is no negative marking, students must attempt every single question.
Knowing the exact AISSEE syllabus is the first step to cracking the exam. Here is the complete subject-wise syllabus for both Class 6 and Class 9 — the same topics covered in all YSDA coaching batches.
300 marks · 125 questions · 150 minutes · Bilingual
400 marks · 150 questions · 180 minutes · English only

9 reasons why YSDA is India's most trusted Sainik School coaching institute for AISSEE preparation.
25,000+ AISSEE, 1,325+ RIMC, 42,000+ RMS, and 5,000+ NDA selections — verified numbers no other coaching institute matches. Our selection rate in Sainik School Kapurthala alone is the highest in Punjab year after year.
Our teachers are dedicated AISSEE specialists — not general school teachers. Each subject has a dedicated expert who knows the exact question patterns, common traps, and scoring strategies for that subject in AISSEE.
Every student at YSDA completes 40+ full-length AISSEE mock tests before the exam — in real exam conditions with the actual time limit. After each test, personalised feedback identifies exactly which topics need improvement.
Supervised hostel in Amritsar with organic meals, daily physical training, structured 6-hour study sessions, and 24×7 security for both boys and girls. The residential environment mirrors Sainik School life itself — giving students a head start.
Live online AISSEE classes accessible from any state — same teaching quality, same mock tests, for students who cannot relocate to campus. Students from North India, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and all other states prepare and crack AISSEE through our online batches.
The written exam is just Stage 1. YSDA prepares students for the medical examination standards (vision, height, fitness benchmarks) and conducts mock interview sessions to build confidence for the final selection round.
Affordable fees with scholarship support for deserving students. Financial constraints should never stop a bright child from joining. Call us to know about our full scholarship programme and eligibility criteria.
Our students have been selected into Sainik Schools across every state — Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, North India, Punjab, Rajasthan, and more. We guide students on choice filling to maximise their admission probability.
We guide every family through the AISSEE application — form filling, document upload, school preference selection, admit card download — completely free of charge, whether you are enrolled with us or not.
A structured preparation strategy is what separates selected students from the rest. Here is the exact approach YSDA follows with every student to maximise AISSEE selection chances.
AISSEE is held in January–February. Ideally begin coaching by February–March of the previous year. For Class 6 entry, YSDA recommends enrolling from Class 4 itself — students who start early build stronger conceptual clarity and perform significantly better under exam pressure. Last-minute preparation of 2–3 months rarely succeeds in this exam due to the 50:1 competition ratio.
Mathematics carries 50% of the total marks in both Class 6 (150/300) and Class 9 (200/400). Students who score 43–48 out of 50 questions in Maths consistently make the final merit list. Focus on speed and accuracy — solve at least 30 Maths problems daily. Start with number systems and fractions before moving to geometry and mensuration.
The Intelligence section is the easiest to improve with regular practice. Most patterns — series, analogy, mirror images, coding-decoding — follow predictable rules. Practicing 15–20 reasoning questions every day for 3 months will take a student from average to excellent in this section. YSDA students complete dedicated reasoning drills 5 days a week.
Since AISSEE has no negative marking, speed and coverage are everything — attempting all 125 or 150 questions within time is a skill that must be practised, not assumed. Weekly mock tests in real exam conditions build the time management and exam temperament that classroom study alone cannot provide. At YSDA, students complete 40+ mocks before the actual exam day.
Sainik School selection is not just a written exam. The medical examination checks vision, height-weight ratio, and general physical fitness. Students who are physically active throughout preparation are better focused academically and also pass the medical round more confidently. YSDA's residential campus includes daily morning physical training for exactly this reason.
The interview stage eliminates many students who passed the written exam but were unprepared to speak confidently about themselves, India's defence forces, and current affairs. YSDA conducts regular mock interviews throughout the coaching period — not just in the final week. This builds the calm, confident communication that Sainik School interviewers look for.
Why thousands of Indian families choose Sainik Schools — and why quality AISSEE coaching gives your child the best chance of getting in.
Sainik Schools produce the highest number of NDA selections of any school category in India. The residential military-style environment from Class 6 onwards prepares students physically, mentally, and academically for a career in the Indian Armed Forces.
Sainik School education is heavily subsidised by the central government. Deserving students receive scholarships covering nearly the full cost of education, hostel, and meals — making world-class residential schooling accessible to all economic backgrounds.
Beyond academics, Sainik Schools build discipline, leadership, teamwork, and physical fitness through sports, NCC, adventure activities, and structured residential life — creating well-rounded individuals prepared for any career.
All 133 Sainik Schools follow CBSE in a fully residential environment — quality education with the discipline and exposure of a top boarding school at a fraction of the private school cost.
Since 2021, girls have full access to all 133 Sainik Schools with 20% reservation in every school. YSDA's dedicated girls coaching batches and separate girls hostel at Amritsar have helped hundreds of girl students achieve this dream.
Girls are fully eligible for AISSEE. With 20 seats reserved for girls in every 100, and dedicated YSDA coaching and hostel facilities — 2026 is the best year for girls to crack Sainik School admission.
Young Star Defence Academy provides dedicated girls coaching batches, a fully separate and safe girls hostel at our Amritsar campus, and personalised guidance for the complete AISSEE selection process.

Our online AISSEE coaching programme is available to students from every state in India. Sainik School coaching provides structured AISSEE preparation — covering Maths, English, Intelligence, and GK — through mock tests, doubt clearing, and expert mentorship. With over 50 students competing for every single seat, coached students statistically outperform self-prepared students by a significant margin. YSDA's students have a dramatically higher first-attempt selection rate than national averages. Self-study alone is rarely sufficient given the competitive cutoffs required.
For AISSEE Class 6, general category students typically need 200–250 out of 300 marks to get selected. For Class 9, the cutoff is around 280–320 out of 400. These cutoffs vary based on state quota, school preference, and competition intensity in a given year. SC/ST students have a lower cutoff. Punjab students targeting Sainik School Kapurthala face higher competition due to the state's strong coaching culture. YSDA's mock test analysis helps each student know their realistic target score.
Young Star Defence Academy offers India's most comprehensive online AISSEE coaching — live classes with AISSEE-specialist faculty, recorded sessions for revision, digital study material updated for the latest NTA pattern, weekly full-length mock tests, and dedicated doubt-clearing sessions. Our online students have been selected in Sainik Schools across every state. The programme is accessible from any device, from any district of India, at affordable fees.
For Class 6 entry: the student must be between 10 and 12 years of age as on 31st March of the year of admission, and currently studying in Class V. For Class 9 entry: the student must be between 13 and 15 years as on 31st March, and currently studying in Class VIII. These age limits are the same across all states — there is no state-wise variation in the age eligibility criteria. Use the Age Calculator above to instantly check your child's eligibility.
AISSEE Class 6 syllabus covers four subjects. Mathematics (50 questions, 150 marks): number systems, fractions, decimals, basic geometry, mensuration, time & distance. Language/English (25 questions, 50 marks): grammar, comprehension, vocabulary. General Knowledge (25 questions, 50 marks): Indian geography, history, defence awareness, current affairs. Intelligence & Reasoning (25 questions, 50 marks): series, analogy, mirror images, coding-decoding. The exam is bilingual — students can answer in Hindi or English. See the full detailed syllabus in the section above.
Ideally 8–12 months of dedicated preparation before the exam date. YSDA recommends starting coaching from Class 4–5 for Class 6 entry, and from Class 7 for Class 9 entry. Early starters develop stronger conceptual clarity, complete more mock tests, and handle exam pressure more calmly. Students who join 2–3 months before the exam face a very steep challenge given the competition. The earlier the start, the better — YSDA accepts students from Class 3 onwards for foundation coaching.
No. AISSEE has absolutely no negative marking for any subject or class. All questions are objective multiple-choice questions (MCQ) with four options. This means students should attempt every single question — even a guess gives a chance of earning marks. Skipping questions only reduces the total score with no benefit. YSDA trains students specifically for this — our strategy focuses on time management so students can attempt all 125 or 150 questions comfortably within the allotted time.
Sainik School fees are set by the government and are heavily subsidised compared to private boarding schools. The annual fee is approximately ₹1.08 lakh to ₹1.5 lakh depending on the school, covering tuition, hostel, meals, uniform, and activities. This is a fraction of what private residential schools charge for similar quality. Additionally, students from SC/ST backgrounds and those below a certain income threshold receive government scholarships that cover most or all of the fees. Many YSDA students attend Sainik School on full scholarship.
Yes. Girls from any state in India can join YSDA through our online coaching programme or by coming to our residential campus in Amritsar. We have a fully separate, safe girls hostel. Since 2021, all 133 Sainik Schools admit girls and 20% of every school's seats are reserved for girl students. YSDA has dedicated girls coaching batches with female faculty mentors. Our girl students have been selected in Sainik Schools across Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, North India, Uttarakhand, and other states.
