Sainik Schools in India are no longer just for boys. Over the past five years, the Ministry of Defence has actively opened doors for girls across all 133 Sainik Schools in India — making this one of the most significant shifts in Indian defence education. For parents asking "can my daughter join a Sainik School?" — the answer is a clear and confident yes.

This guide covers everything: which Sainik Schools accept girls, how many seats are reserved, the complete AISSEE admission process, eligibility, fees, and how to prepare for the exam. We have compiled this from official sources and our experience coaching 300+ Amritsar girls who have cleared Sainik School entrance exams.

Section 01

Can Girls Take Admission in Sainik School?

Yes — girls are fully eligible to take admission in Sainik Schools in India. This was confirmed and expanded through official Ministry of Defence policy, and from the 2021–22 academic year onwards, girls have been admitted into Sainik Schools through the same AISSEE entrance exam conducted by NTA.

Before 2021, Sainik Schools in India were exclusively for boys. The government's decision to include girls was a historic shift — one that opened up one of the country's most respected residential defence education systems to half the population. Today, all 133 Sainik Schools in India accept girls for Class 6 admission.

Official Status (2026): Girls are eligible for Sainik School admission through AISSEE for Class 6. Several Sainik Schools also now accept girls for Class 9. Girls appear in the same written exam as boys but are ranked on a separate gender-wise merit list. Their seats are separately allotted through the girls quota.

The common confusion is that some parents believe Sainik Schools are only for the children of defence personnel or only for boys. Both assumptions are incorrect. Any girl of the correct age, from any background, from any state in India, can appear for AISSEE and compete for admission to a Sainik School.

Section 02

How Many Seats Are Reserved for Girls in Sainik School?

Out of every 100 seats in a Sainik School, 20 seats are reserved for girls and 80 seats are for boys. This 20% girl quota applies uniformly across all 133 Sainik Schools. Girls compete among themselves for these 20 seats — they do not compete against boys for the same seats.

Why Separate Merit Lists Benefit Girls

The separate merit list is actually an advantage. Girls do not compete with the entire pool of male candidates — they only compete among themselves for 20% of the seats. This means a girl who scores, say, 220/300 might secure admission even if a boy with the same score does not, because the cut-offs for boys (competing for 80 seats) are typically higher than for girls (competing for 20 seats).

Important: Even with 20% reservation, competition among girls is extremely high. With lakhs of students appearing for AISSEE every year, the actual merit cut-off for girls in top Sainik Schools can be very competitive. Start preparation early — ideally from Class 4 or 5.

Section 05

AISSEE Exam Pattern for Girls — Class 6 & Class 9

Girls appear in the same AISSEE exam as boys. The exam is offline (OMR-based), objective (MCQ), and has no negative marking. Every question answered correctly adds to the score — there is no penalty for wrong answers, so all questions must be attempted.

Class 6 Exam — 300 Marks

SubjectNo. of QuestionsMarks per QTotal Marks
Mathematics503150
Language (English or Hindi)25250
Intelligence25250
General Knowledge25250
TOTAL125300

Duration: 150 minutes · Bilingual (English & Hindi) · No negative marking · Minimum 25% per subject, 40% overall to qualify

Class 9 Exam — 400 Marks

SubjectNo. of QuestionsMarks per QTotal Marks
Mathematics504200
Intelligence25250
English25250
General Science25250
Social Studies25250

Key Exam Tip: Since there is no negative marking, girls should attempt all 125 (or 150) questions. Focus on Mathematics as it carries the most weight — 150 out of 300 marks for Class 6. A score above 65–70% in Maths alone can significantly improve total ranking.

Section 06

Step-by-Step Admission Process for Girls — AISSEE 2026

The AISSEE admission process for girls has 8 stages — from application to final school allotment. Here is the complete process in order:

01
Check Eligibility

Confirm your daughter is aged 10–12 years (Class 6) or 13–15 years (Class 9) as on 31 March of the admission year, and is studying in the correct class from a recognised school.

02
Fill AISSEE Online Application on NTA Portal

Visit exams.nta.nic.in when the AISSEE notification is released (typically September–October). Fill personal details, school details, choose preferred Sainik Schools, and upload required documents — photograph and signature.

03
Pay Application Fee

Pay the AISSEE application fee online. Fee is approximately Rs. 550 for general/OBC candidates and Rs. 400 for SC/ST. Keep the payment receipt safe.

04
Download Admit Card

Download the AISSEE admit card from the NTA portal approximately 2–3 weeks before the exam. Carry it to the exam centre along with a valid photo ID (Aadhaar card recommended).

05
Appear for the AISSEE Written Exam

AISSEE is held in January each year. It is an offline OMR-based exam. Attempt all questions — no negative marking. Class 6: 125 Qs, 150 minutes. Class 9: 150 Qs, 180 minutes.

06
Check Result & Gender-Wise Merit List

AISSEE results are declared on the NTA portal. Girls are listed on a separate merit list. Shortlisted girls receive call letters for the next stage. A high merit rank increases chances of allotment to a preferred school.

07
Medical Examination at Army Hospital

Shortlisted girls appear for a medical exam at a designated Army medical facility. The exam checks physical fitness, eyesight (unaided vision), hearing, height/weight, and overall health. Prepare for this in advance — daily physical training helps.

08
School Allotment & Reporting for Admission

Final school allotment is based on written exam marks, medical fitness, category, and preference of schools. Allotted girls must report to the Sainik School as per the official schedule with all required documents.

Section 07

Common Questions

FAQs — Sainik School for Girls in India

Yes. Girls can take admission in all 133 Sainik Schools in India through the AISSEE (All India Sainik School Entrance Exam) conducted by NTA. Girls have been eligible since the 2021–22 academic year. The process is the same as for boys — girls appear in the same exam but are ranked on a separate girls merit list.

Out of every 100 seats in a Sainik School, 20 seats are reserved exclusively for girls (20% girl quota) and 80 seats are for boys. Girls compete among themselves for the 20 seats — they are not in competition with boys for seats. This applies uniformly across all 133 Sainik Schools in India.

For Class 6 entry, girls must be between 10 and 12 years of age as on 31st March of the admission year. For Class 9 entry, girls must be between 13 and 15 years as on 31st March. The girl must also have passed or be currently studying in Class V (for Class 6) or Class VIII (for Class 9) from a recognised school.

Some of the most sought-after Sainik Schools for girls include Sainik School Rewari (Haryana), Sainik School Kapurthala (Punjab), Sainik School Gopalganj (Bihar), Sainik School Chhingchhip (Mizoram), and Sainik School Bijapur (Karnataka). However, all 133 Sainik Schools accept girls, and selection is based on AISSEE merit rank and category. Choose schools in preferred states and check their specific facilities for girls.

No. There is no separate exam for girls. Girls and boys appear in the same AISSEE written exam at the same centres, on the same date. However, after the exam, separate merit lists are prepared — one for girls (competing for 20% of seats) and one for boys (competing for 80% of seats). This ensures fair representation for both genders.

Sainik School is an excellent choice for girls. It provides a structured CBSE residential education, daily physical training, leadership development, and a direct path to NDA and defence careers. Girls who graduate from Sainik Schools consistently outperform peers in competitive exams, have higher discipline, and build a lifelong national network. The 20% reserved seats mean girls have a dedicated path into these prestigious institutions.

Key benefits for girls include: CBSE academic excellence with strong Maths/Science focus, physical fitness training, leadership and discipline development, a direct pathway to NDA (now open to girls), government-subsidised residential education, safe and supervised campus environment, Sainik School alumni network, and significantly higher career success rates in competitive examinations and defence services.

Sainik School fees for girls are the same as for boys and are government-regulated. For general category students, fees are approximately Rs. 1.5 lakh to Rs. 2.5 lakh per year — which covers tuition, hostel, all meals, uniform, books, medical care, and sports. SC/ST students and children of defence personnel receive significant fee concessions. Exact fees vary by school and are updated annually by the Ministry of Defence.

The earlier, the better. Ideally, preparation for Sainik School Class 6 should begin from Class 3 or Class 4. This gives 2–3 years of structured preparation, allowing students to build strong foundations in Mathematics, GK, and Intelligence. Young Star Defence Academy enrolls students from Class 3 onwards. For Class 9, at least 1–2 years of dedicated preparation is recommended. Starting early is the single biggest factor in selection success.
