About Sainik Schools

What Are Sainik Schools & Why They Matter

Sainik Schools are a network of residential schools established by the Government of India under the Sainik Schools Society, Ministry of Defence. Founded in 1961 by V. K. Krishna Menon to bridge the gap between civilian and military life, Sainik Schools were built to prepare students academically and physically for entry into the National Defence Academy (NDA) and other defence institutions.

Today there are 133 Sainik Schools across India — spread across every state and Union Territory. Admission to these schools is through the All India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination (AISSEE), conducted annually by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Seats are limited and the competition is intense.

Young Star Defence Academy has produced 25,000+ Sainik School selections — making it the most trusted coaching institute in India for AISSEE preparation. Our structured programme covers every aspect of the exam, physical standards, and interview — giving every student the best possible chance.

🏫 What Are Sainik Schools?

Government-run residential schools under the Ministry of Defence, designed to prepare students for the NDA and Armed Forces. Currently 133 schools across India, offering CBSE-affiliated education with military discipline and co-curricular excellence.

📋 What Is AISSEE?

The All India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination (AISSEE) is conducted once a year by NTA (National Testing Agency) for admission to Class VI and Class IX in all Sainik Schools across India. It is a single national exam for all 133 schools.

👧 Girls Now Eligible

Sainik Schools are now open to girl students following government policy changes. Young Star Defence Academy actively coaches both boys and girls for AISSEE — with equal preparation standards and dedicated batches.

🚀 Path to NDA & Beyond

Sainik Schools are the premier feeder institutions for the NDA. Students who complete their schooling at Sainik Schools consistently outperform peers in NDA written exams and SSB interviews — giving them a decisive lifetime advantage.

✅ No Negative Marking

The AISSEE has no negative marking — every question attempted is a potential gain. Young Star trains students to maximise attempts strategically, improving both accuracy and overall score across all subject areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sainik School FAQs

Sainik Schools are residential schools run under the Sainik Schools Society, Ministry of Defence, Government of India. Established in 1961, there are currently 133 Sainik Schools across India. They follow the CBSE curriculum and are designed to prepare students for entry into the National Defence Academy (NDA) and careers in the Indian Armed Forces through structured academic, physical, and character development from school age.

AISSEE stands for All India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination. It is conducted once a year by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to Class VI and Class IX across all 133 Sainik Schools in India. A single AISSEE score is valid for all schools, and students list their school preferences during the application. Seat allotment is based on merit rank and category.

No — AISSEE has no negative marking for either Class VI or Class IX entry. Every question attempted is a potential gain. Young Star's coaching specifically trains students to attempt every question confidently — through speed practice, time management drills, and full-length mock tests that simulate actual exam conditions.

For Class VI entry, candidates must be between 10 and 12 years of age as on 31st March of the year of admission — meaning students in Class V are the primary target group. For Class IX entry, candidates must be between 13 and 15 years of age as on 31st March — targeting students completing Class VIII. Young Star recommends beginning preparation at least 6–8 months before the exam date.

Yes — following a Government of India policy directive, Sainik Schools are now open to girl students. Young Star Defence Academy coaches both boys and girls equally for AISSEE, with dedicated batches and the same standard of preparation. Girls compete under the same merit process as boys and are eligible for all 133 Sainik Schools across India.

The Class VI AISSEE consists of 125 MCQ questions across four sections — Mathematics (50 questions, 150 marks), Intelligence (25 questions, 75 marks), Language/English or Hindi (25 questions, 50 marks), and General Knowledge (25 questions, 25 marks) — totalling 300 marks. The exam is 2.5 hours long, conducted in OMR format with no negative marking.

During the AISSEE application, students submit a preference list of Sainik Schools in order of priority. After the result, NTA allots schools based on merit rank, category (Defence, State, General), and the student's preference order. Since seat matrices vary by school and category, strategic preference ordering is critical to maximising selection chances. Young Star's counsellors provide personalised school selection guidance for every student based on their expected rank and category.

Sainik Schools prepare students for NDA from Class 6 itself — through rigorous academics (especially Maths and Science for Navy/Air Force NDA eligibility), physical training, discipline, and personality development. Sainik School alumni consistently dominate NDA merit lists and SSB recommendation rates. Most major Sainik Schools maintain annual NDA selection tallies, and their cadets have a measurably higher probability of clearing both the NDA written exam and SSB interview compared to students from regular schools.
